INVESTMENT PHILOSOPHY AND PROCESS


Founded in 1983, Winslow offered green investment products and services for nearly a quarter-century, and Brown Advisory has continued that tradition. We maintain a consistent and simple investment philosophy: carefully selected companies that offer innovative solutions and take advantage of green markets and business practices can offer investors significant growth over the long-term.

Our investment approach focuses on finding companies that seek to take advantage of green market opportunities, or companies that build competitive advantage through clean and efficient business practices. Within our Green Growth strategy, we invest according to a variety of green solutions investment themes, such as clean energy, water management, green transportation, resource efficiency, and others. Within our Brown Advisory Large-Cap Sustainability strategy, we invest in environmentally sustainable companies across a variety of industries, with a focus on firms that we believe are ideally positioned to benefit from the ongoing transformation to a greener economy. Our strategy is to find hidden opportunities among these companies - companies that appear poised for growth but whose stocks are undervalued or unrecognized by the broader market.

We consider our approach to be somewhat unique. We incorporate various ESG (environmental, social, and governance) analytical tools into our investment decisions, and apply our expertise within green market sectors, in order to seek long-term capital growth that is driven by environmental sustainability. We utilize a comprehensive approach to green investing, because many different companies - from the newest solar or biodiesel company, to the traditional manufacturer using recycled materials or low-emission production technology - can achieve high levels of financial performance through dedication to high levels of environmental performance.

At the end of the day, we measure our performance against the entire financial services industry - green and non-green managers alike - because that's how individual and institutional investors will measure us over the long-term. We seek to distinguish ourselves from other investment management firms through our comprehensive research methods, including environmental and corporate governance analysis, through our investment expertise in green market segments, and through the in-depth research and careful stock selection that is the hallmark of Brown Advisory's equity investment process.

Investment in growth stocks may be susceptible to rapid price swings, especially during periods of economic uncertainty. The Winslow Green Growth Fund ("the Fund") invests in small and medium capitalization companies, which present greater risk than larger companies due to limited product lines, markets and financial or managerial resources. The Fund invests in foreign securities, which present increased risk over U.S. investments in the form of currency fluctuation, different regulation, accounting standards, trading practices and levels of available information, generally higher transaction costs, and political risk; it also focuses on green solutions companies, which presents increased risk over a more diversified portfolio by limiting investment choices to a specific sector that may or may not perform as well as other industry sectors. Total return figures include reinvestment of investment income and capital gains. During the period, some of the Fund's fees were waived or expenses reimbursed; otherwise, total return would have been lower. Prior to April 1, 2001, Winslow Management Company managed a common trust fund (“CTF”) with investment objectives and policies that were, in all material respects, equivalent to the Fund. The Fund’s performance for periods before April 1, 2001 is that of the CTF and reflects the expenses of the CTF. If the CTF’s performance had been readjusted to reflect estimated expenses of the Fund for its first fiscal year, the performance would have been lower. The CTF was not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 (“1940 Act”) nor subject to certain investment limitations, diversification requirements, and other restrictions imposed by the 1940 Act and the Internal Revenue Code, which, if applicable, may have adversely affected the performance results.
